Dog Ideal Weight Calculator
Find your dog’s healthy target weight three ways: by breed and sex, from its Body Condition Score using the vet target-weight formula, and — for puppies — by predicting adult weight by age. Real numbers in kg and lb, not a one-size-fits-all guess.
How the Dog Ideal Weight Calculator Works
Vets don’t rely on the scale alone. They use the 9-point Body Condition Score, where 4–5 out of 9 is ideal and every point above 5 is roughly 10% of excess body weight. That is why the BCS Target Weight tab is the most accurate way to answer “how much should my dog weigh?” — it turns a hands-on assessment into a concrete number in kg or lb.
How to Calculate Ideal Weight from Body Condition Score
The Body Condition Score is a 1–9 scale. A score of 4–5 is ideal; 6–9 means overweight to obese, with each point worth about 10% over ideal. To find the target weight:
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Estimate your dog’s BCS (1–9) using the rib, waist and tuck checks below |
| 2 | Subtract 5 from the score, then multiply by 10 — that is the % over ideal |
| 3 | Divide current weight by (1 + % over ÷ 100) to get the target weight |
Ideal Dog Weight by Breed & Sex
Breed sets the baseline, and within a breed males usually run heavier than females. Here are ideal adult ranges for popular breeds — the By Breed & Sex tab covers 45+ breeds:
| Breed | Male (ideal) | Female (ideal) |
|---|---|---|
| Labrador Retriever | 29–36 kg (64–79 lb) | 25–32 kg (55–71 lb) |
| German Shepherd | 30–40 kg (66–88 lb) | 22–32 kg (49–71 lb) |
| Golden Retriever | 29–34 kg (65–75 lb) | 25–29 kg (55–65 lb) |
| Beagle | 10–11 kg (22–24 lb) | 9–10 kg (20–22 lb) |
| French Bulldog | 9–14 kg (20–31 lb) | 8–13 kg (18–29 lb) |
| Chihuahua | 1.5–3 kg (3–6 lb) | 1.5–3 kg (3–6 lb) |
| Great Dane | 54–90 kg (119–198 lb) | 45–59 kg (99–130 lb) |
Ranges are guides, not rules. A working-line or large-framed dog can sit above the range and still be lean, while a small-framed dog belongs near the bottom — which is why body condition always settles the question.
Is My Dog Overweight or Underweight? The Home Checks
You can assess your dog’s weight without a scale using the three checks vets and owners on Reddit and Quora agree on:
Ribs. Run your hands along the rib cage — you should feel each rib easily under a thin layer of fat, without pressing hard, and without seeing them poke out. Waist. Look down from above — the body should curve inward behind the ribs into a clear hourglass. Tummy. From the side, the belly should tuck up toward the hind legs rather than hang level or sag.
Predicting a Puppy’s Adult Weight by Age
For puppies, the question flips to “how big will they get?” No formula is exact — as owners on r/puppy101 note, calculators often over- or under-shoot — but size-based growth curves give a solid ballpark. General fractions of adult weight by age:
| Age | Small / medium | Large / giant |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | ~40% of adult | ~28% of adult |
| 4 months | ~50% (double it for a rough adult) | ~35% |
| 6 months | ~66% (two-thirds grown) | ~50% |
| 12 months | ~95% (near adult) | ~80–85% |
| 18–24 months | Fully grown | Filling out to adult |
Small and medium dogs reach adult weight around 12 months; large and giant breeds keep building muscle until 18–24 months. Use the Adult Weight Predictor tab for an estimate, and our Puppy Development Calculator for growth milestones.
Why Ideal Weight Matters
Keeping a dog at its ideal weight is one of the most powerful things an owner controls. A landmark 14-year Purina study found dogs kept lean lived about 1.8 years longer than overweight littermates, with later onset of arthritis and chronic disease. Excess weight raises the risk of diabetes, joint disease and heart problems, while being underweight can signal illness or under-feeding.
