Common Questions

Pet Health Questions, Answered

Our calculators are built around the questions pet owners search for most. Here are the answers — and the tools that help.

The old “multiply by 7” rule is outdated. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human. After that, each dog year adds 4–5 human years depending on breed size. Our Dog Age Calculator uses the latest AKC and veterinary research to give you a breed-specific result.

Daily food intake depends on your dog’s weight, age, activity level, and the caloric density of the food. A sedentary 30 lb dog needs far fewer calories than an active working dog of the same size. Our Dog Food Calculator calculates your dog’s Resting Energy Requirement and adjusts for their life stage so you can stop guessing.

Cats age much faster in their first two years. A 1-year-old cat is roughly 15 in human years; a 2-year-old is about 24. After that, each cat year equals roughly 4 human years. Our Cat Age Calculator gives you an accurate feline-to-human age conversion instantly.

The best way to check is the rib test — you should be able to feel but not clearly see the ribs. Vets use a Body Condition Score (BCS) on a 1–9 scale, where 4–5 is ideal. Our Dog BMI Calculator gives you a BCS estimate and ideal weight range for your dog’s breed.

A typical adult cat needs around 20 calories per pound of ideal body weight per day, but indoor, neutered, or less active cats need fewer. Our Cat Calorie Calculator computes your cat’s exact daily needs using the NRC and WSAVA formula.

Dog pregnancy lasts approximately 63 days from ovulation, or about 58–68 days from the first mating date. Our Dog Pregnancy Calculator gives you the estimated due date and week-by-week development milestones.

A rabbit’s diet should be approximately 80% high-quality hay, 15% fresh leafy greens, and no more than 5% pellets. Pellets should be limited to about ¼ cup per 5 lbs of body weight daily. Our Small Animal Calculators include a rabbit feeding tool to calculate exact portions.

Tank size depends on species and number of fish. A single goldfish needs at least 20 gallons; a betta fish needs at least 5 gallons. Our Fish Tank Size Calculator gives you a species-specific recommendation.

Parrot lifespan varies enormously by species. Budgies typically live 5–10 years, cockatiels 15–20 years, and African Greys 40–60 years. Large macaws may exceed 80 years. Our Bird Calculators include age and lifespan tools for all major species.

A healthy adult bearded dragon typically weighs 300–500 grams. Weight should be proportional to length — underweight dragons show prominent hip bones; overweight ones develop fatty deposits behind the head. Use our Reptile Weight Calculator for a species-specific healthy range.
