How to Calculate Your Dog’s Pregnancy

This dog pregnancy calculator works out your dog’s due date by counting 63 days from when she was mated — the average length of canine gestation. Dogs are pregnant for roughly nine weeks, and a healthy litter can arrive any time from day 58 to day 68. The date is most accurate when it is timed from ovulation rather than mating, because a female can conceive a few days after breeding. Enter the breeding date above and the tool gives you the due date, a week-by-week guide, the key vet-visit dates, and a temperature check for the start of labour.

In practice, counting from the mating date is the method most owners use and it works well. If your vet confirmed ovulation with progesterone testing or picked up the LH surge, use that date instead for a tighter estimate — gestation is almost exactly 63 days from ovulation, so the window narrows to a day or two either side.

How Long Are Dogs Pregnant?

A dog’s pregnancy lasts about 63 days — a little over two months, or around nine weeks. Because sperm can survive for several days inside the female and eggs need time to mature before they can be fertilised, the gestation length looks more variable when you count from the mating date (anywhere from 58 to 68 days) than it really is. Measured from the day of ovulation, almost every normal pregnancy runs 63 days, plus or minus one.

Is a dog pregnant for 55 days? No — 55 days is too short for a full-term litter. Puppies born much before day 58 are usually premature and need urgent veterinary care. The normal range is 58–68 days, centred on 63.

Dog Pregnancy Week by Week

Canine pregnancy is often split into three trimesters of about three weeks each. The first three weeks are nearly invisible from the outside; the middle weeks are when a vet can confirm the pregnancy and development speeds up; and the final weeks are about preparing for whelping. Here is the stage-by-stage picture the Week by Week tab builds into a dated calendar for you:

Week What happens
Weeks 1–3
Days 0–21
Fertilisation, the embryos travel to the uterus and implant around day 16–18. Few or no outward signs; keep her routine normal.
Week 4
Days 22–28
Spine, eyes and limbs form and a heartbeat appears. Best window for an ultrasound (day 25–30) to confirm pregnancy. Nipples may enlarge.
Weeks 5–6
Days 29–42
Fetuses look like tiny dogs, develop pigment and grow fast. The belly rounds out and appetite rises — move to a puppy/pregnancy diet.
Week 7
Days 43–49
Skeletons calcify, so an X-ray after day 45 can count the puppies. Belly is clearly large; she may shed tummy hair.
Weeks 8–9
Days 50–63
Puppies fully formed, milk comes in, nesting begins. Set up the whelping box and start twice-daily temperature checks.

How to Tell How Far Along Your Dog Is

If you don’t know the exact mating date, your vet can estimate how many weeks pregnant your dog is. An ultrasound from around day 25 confirms the pregnancy, shows heartbeats and gives a rough age from fetal size. After day 45, an X-ray shows the calcified skeletons, both to count the puppies and to judge timing. At home, the clearest signs are enlarged, darker nipples and a rounding belly from about day 40, followed by milk and nesting in the last fortnight. The Week by Week tab maps a known mating date onto the stage she’s in today.

Preparing for Whelping (the Last Week)

From about day 58, take your dog’s rectal temperature twice a day and write it down. A healthy dog sits around 100–102.5°F (37.8–39.2°C). When the temperature drops below about 99°F (37.2°C), labour usually follows within 24 hours — the single most reliable at-home predictor. Alongside the temperature drop, watch for restlessness, nesting, panting, and refusing food. Have a clean whelping box ready in a quiet, warm spot, and keep your vet’s number handy in case of complications.

When to call the vet urgently: strong contractions for more than 30–60 minutes with no puppy, more than 2 hours between puppies, green or bloody discharge before the first puppy, or obvious distress. When in doubt, call — whelping problems move fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my dog’s pregnancy?
Count 63 days from the mating date for the due date. For a tighter estimate, count 63 days from ovulation (confirmed by your vet with progesterone testing). A normal litter arrives any time between days 58 and 68.
How long is a dog pregnant in months?
About two months — 63 days on average, or roughly nine weeks. It is usually described as two months rather than three, since the full term is just over 60 days.
How can I tell how many weeks pregnant my dog is?
If you know the mating date, divide the days since by seven. Otherwise a vet can estimate the stage from an ultrasound (from day 25) or an X-ray (after day 45), and from signs like nipple and belly changes around day 40.
Is a dog pregnant for 55 days?
No. 55 days is shorter than full term. Normal canine gestation is 58–68 days, averaging 63. Puppies born before about day 58 are usually premature and need urgent veterinary care.
When can a vet confirm my dog is pregnant?
An ultrasound can confirm pregnancy and detect heartbeats from about day 25–30. A blood test for relaxin is reliable from around day 28. An X-ray after day 45 counts the puppies.
What are the signs labour is near?
A temperature drop below about 99°F (37.2°C) means labour within roughly 24 hours. Other signs are nesting, restlessness, panting and refusing food. Take her temperature twice daily from day 58.
How accurate is the due date from the mating date?
It is a good guide but can be a few days off, because a female can conceive several days after mating. Dates timed from ovulation or the LH surge (via vet testing) are far more precise.
Does breed or litter size change the length?
Gestation length is similar across breeds at about 63 days. Very large litters sometimes deliver a day or two early and small litters a little late, but the 58–68 day range covers nearly all normal pregnancies.

The 63-day gestation, the 58–68 day whelping window, the ultrasound (day 25–30) and X-ray (after day 45) timings, and the pre-labour temperature drop below 99°F (37.2°C) are drawn from standard veterinary reproduction guidance. This tool gives estimates and does not replace hands-on veterinary care during pregnancy and whelping.
