Cat Age Calculator
How old is your cat in human years? This free cat age calculator converts cat years to human years from an age in years, months, weeks or a birth date, reverses human years back to cat years, and shows your cat’s life stage — using the vet-backed 15-9-4 formula, not the old “times seven” myth.
How the Cat Age Calculator Works
The five tools cover an age in years and months, a kitten age in weeks, a human-to-cat reversal, a birth-date calculator, and a life-stage and lifespan guide.
Cat Years to Human Years Chart
This cat age chart shows the human-year equivalent and life stage for every common cat age, based on the 15-9-4 veterinary model.
| Cat age | Human years | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ~10 years | Kitten |
| 1 year | 15 years | Kitten / junior |
| 2 years | 24 years | Young adult |
| 3 years | 28 years | Young adult |
| 5 years | 36 years | Young adult |
| 7 years | 44 years | Mature adult |
| 10 years | 56 years | Mature / senior |
| 12 years | 64 years | Senior |
| 15 years | 76 years | Super senior |
| 18 years | 88 years | Super senior |
| 20 years | 96 years | Super senior |
How Do You Calculate a Cat’s Age in Human Years?
Use the 15-9-4 rule: give the first year 15 human years, add 9 for the second year to reach 24 at age two, then add 4 human years for each year after that. For a cat older than two, the shortcut is 24 + (cat age − 2) × 4. A 7-year-old cat is 24 + (5 × 4) = 44; a 10-year-old is 24 + (8 × 4) = 56; a 20-year-old is 24 + (18 × 4) = 96. For kittens, count part-years: six months lands near 10 human years and nine months near 12 or 13, because growth is fastest at the very start.
Why the “One Year = Seven” Rule Is a Myth
Multiplying a cat’s age by seven is the number most people remember, and it is wrong. Cats are not small, slow-aging humans — they reach sexual maturity before their first birthday and are physically adult by two, so those early years count for far more than seven apiece. Pet owners on Reddit’s r/coolguides often point out that older “times seven” charts are inconsistent and non-linear precisely because they ignore this fast start. The 15-9-4 model, used by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and major pet-health sources, matches how cats actually mature and is what this calculator uses.
Cat Life Stages: Kitten to Super Senior
Vets group feline aging into life stages, which matter more for care than a single number. A kitten (0–1 year) is growing fast and needs vaccinations and neutering. A young adult (1–6 years) is in its prime. A mature adult (7–10 years) is middle-aged and should start twice-yearly checks and weight watching. A senior (11–14 years, roughly 60–72 human years) needs screening for kidney, thyroid, dental and joint problems. A super senior (15+), equivalent to a human in their late 70s and beyond, needs close monitoring — and many well-cared-for cats comfortably reach this stage.
How Long Do Cats Live?
Most indoor cats live 13 to 17 years, and plenty reach their early twenties with good care; the oldest on record passed 30. Outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats tend to live shorter lives — often just a few years on average — because of traffic, predators, disease and fights. Lifespan also varies by breed and by keeping your cat at a healthy weight, up to date on dental care, and seen by a vet regularly. Vets consider cats senior from around 10, which is the point to step up preventive care rather than wait for problems.
